Monday night was a busy evening for the members of the Honey Brook Fire Company. Crews met around 6:30 for the weekly drill night, after completing the weekly chores around the station everyone headed upstairs to begin training.
Career EMT C. Brogan gave a refresher class on dealing with human bodily fluids which could be the carrier for a host of diseases or sicknesses known as Bloodbourne Pathogens. The class covered how to identify, disinfect exposed equipment or gear and the department's exposure control policy.
Once class was over the members split into two groups for more training. Group #1 trained on fire ground support functions led by Captain L. Stoltzfus, Group #2 led by D/C Klinger and FF J. Robb went over the new training prop that was recently built. Group #2 reviewed the construction of the prop and how the three portions could be assembled and stored, and what training needs this prop brought to the department.
The new prop allows firefighters the ability to practice a wide range of skills needed for different scenarios they may find on the fire ground. It allows them to practice how to enter an upper floor window from a ladder safely, as well as self and buddy survival techniques, ranging from bailing out onto a ladder, to using an escape system and removing victims. The drill also has an attachment called the "Denver Drill Prop" which is designed to teach firefighters how to rescue other firefighters in enclosed spaces with minimal manpower. It was created after the death of Firefighter Mark Langvardt in 1992 while operating at a commercial building fire.
Shortly after training completed Station 33 was alerted for a CO Alarm on Reservoir Rd. Rescue 33 responded within minutes with 8 volunteers. Crews deemed the alarm was set off by a wood stove and cleared the scene. |
