Members Complete Special Vehicle Rescue Course

By Deputy Fire Chief Robert Klinger, Jr.
August 10, 2013

On Saturday August 13, 13 firefighters from Honey Brook and Ludwigs Corner Fire Company’s completed a Dept. of Health (DOH) Special Vehicle Rescue Course. The course is 16 hours long and focuses on vehicle accidents involving large vehicles such as school & charter bus, tractor trailers, dump trucks and emergency services apparatus.

Crews traveled to Stacey’s Salvage on Fieldstone Road for the hands on portion of the training which utilized an old school bus that was donated by Krapf Bus Company and cars in the junkyard. A scenario was established with a bus and a car that had been involved in a crash with the bus resting on top of the vehicle’s roof with a subject trapped in the car. Crews broke into two groups and began stabilizing both vehicles and developed a plan to lift the bus up using High Pressure Air-Lifting Bags and cribbing. Once the vehicle was removed, the hydraulic rescue tools were used to remove the car’s roof, doors, and push the dashboard out of the way.

After lunch the students worked on removing the sides of the bus for additional access and egress points and then finished the day by removing the roof on both ends and performing a “dash roll” to gain access to where the driver would be located.

Congratulations to the following members that completed the training from Honey Brook Fire Company.

Deputy Chief Klinger
Lieutenant Aaron King
Firefighter Steven Kern
